O'Neil tried out for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She was able to make it into the top hundred round after the judges praised her singing ability. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were stunned at this, and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
